‘@NatGeo: The Most Popular Instagram Photos’ Exhibition Opens Nov. 11 at the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C.: Interactive exhibition to serve as centerpiece of world-class photography festival, FotoWeekDC

WASHINGTON (Oct. 7, 2016)— As one of the world’s top brands on Instagram, National Geographic, or @NatGeo, has more than 60 million followers and more than three billion likes on its 11,000+ posted images. This fall, visitors will get to experience the magic of the @NatGeo account firsthand at the “@NatGeo: The Most Popular Instagram Photos” exhibition opening at the National Geographic Museum in Washington, D.C. on Friday, Nov. 11. Featuring more than 200 incredible photographs, interactive components and commentary from National Geographic photographers, the exhibition will be on display in the museum through April 2017.

“@NatGeo” tells the stories of these stunning images and the photographers behind them. The exhibition is broken up into five thematic and experiential sections tagged with some popular hashtags from the site: #Wanderlust, #Curiosity, #Beauty, #Marvel and #TBT. Simultaneously digital and tactile, “@NatGeo” offers visitors an opportunity to interact with National Geographic photography in a whole new way and share their experience with others.

Hands-on, interactive elements include video screens, adjustable filters, and a wall where visitors can curate their own Instagram feed using iconic images from the @NatGeo account. Visitors will also have the opportunity to vote for or “like” their favorite photos in the exhibition and hear audio commentary from photographers about the stories behind various images featured in the exhibition.

The “@NatGeo” exhibition opens in conjunction with the kick off of the ninth annual FotoWeekDC, a world-class, 10-day photography festival. This fall, for the first time ever, National Geographic will be FotoWeekCentral and is partnering with FotoDC and Brightest Young Things to host a week of interesting and engaging public programming at the National Geographic Museum. Running November 11-20, the festival will feature inspiring talks, films, workshops and photo walks as well as stunning exhibitions curated by some of the world’s best photographers and filmmakers.

“Social media has totally changed our world, using the power of photography to connect and empower people around the globe,” said Kathryn Keane, Vice President of National Geographic Exhibitions. “‘@NatGeo’ invites visitors to experience and interact with the world as seen through the eyes of some of National Geographic’s most renowned and prolific photographers and is a perfect way to celebrate FotoWeekDC.”

The “@NatGeo” exhibition accompanies the new National Geographic book, @NATGEO: The Most Popular Instagram Photos (National Geographic Books; on sale October 25; ISBN 978-1-4262-1710-4; 336 pages; $19.95). @NatGeo fans are also invited to participate in the #NatGeoInspires Instagram contest, where participants can win an opportunity to be featured in the “@NatGeo” exhibition and the chance to attend a photography workshop in Washington, D.C.
