The National Geographic Society expresses its support for Mrs. Sharbat Gula and encourages the Pakistani authorities to release her on humanitarian grounds. She has lived a life beset by many challenges and much tragedy. On top of the hardships of life as a refugee, her husband Rahmat died four years ago, and her eldest daughter has also passed away. She is now the sole caregiver for her two remaining daughters and a young son. Mrs. Sharbat Gula has never sought any notoriety, and she is trying to survive and support her family under highly adverse conditions.
