Our Statement Regarding the National Assessment of Educational Progress' Decision to Remove Geography From Its Assessments

The National Geographic Society was founded to increase and diffuse geographic knowledge. We will continue our 131-year commitment to geographic education so that students understand the wonder of our world.

We are disappointed that the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) has decided to remove geography from its assessments. This decision will lead to an important loss of data regarding students' geographic knowledge at a time when it is critical that young people become more conscious and informed changemakers. The National Geographic Society was founded to increase and diffuse geographic knowledge. We will continue our 131-year commitment to geographic education so that students understand the wonder of our world.
