Cape Parrots are adapted for life in high Afromontane forests, and their perfect food is the seeds of yellowwood trees. Unfortunately, yellowwoods have been felled in such numbers that there now isn’t enough fruit to sustain the population. Thankfully, parrots are intelligent and resourceful birds – so as well as their natural diet, Cape Parrots have adapted to feed on many exotic species as they come into fruit, such as this juvenile in a pecan tree. Follow the Cape Parrot Project page for more on our research into feeding behaviour!
